DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES: I. Sign Language Interpreters, Inc. [SLI] provides qualified interpreters for all types of sign language interpreting. The languages used in these services include American Sign Language [ASL], Puerto Rico Sign Language [PRSL], Spanish voicing and English voicing. The languages used for this process of communication are usually subject to the preferences of the consumers (both deaf and hearing). II. The interpreter from SLI strictly adheres to the Interpreter’s Code of Ethics. This code has been established and adopted by the non-profit organization Puerto Rico Registry Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. [PRRID] which is a chapter of the national non-profit organization, Registry Interpreters for the Deaf [RID].
SERVICE REQUESTS: I. A consumer interested in acquiring sign language interpreting services must communicate with SLI and make a formal request for interpreting services. This formal request must include among other things, name of the deaf consumer, the hour, duration, place of service, contact person with telephone, interpreter gender preference and languages preferred. Any special instructions or requests must be made at this time. II. When SLI receives the information, SLI will send a written confirmation [fax, e-mail or letter] for the service indicating number of interpreters being assigned and confirming availability. If a service request is confirmed within 72 business hours of the scheduled service, a written or a verbal confirmation (including messages left on voice mail or an answering machine) will be deemed binding and sufficient. III. In accordance with standard interpreter practices, interpreting services that have a duration of more than two hours usually require two interpreters. This ensures that information is accurately transmitted and minimizes interpreter error from fatigue. IV. In the case that a service is requested within 48 business hours, the service will be considered confirmed at the moment of request. V. A request for service is may be a written request such as a fax, e-mail or letter as well as a verbal request such as a personal telephone conversation and messages left on voice mail.
WAIT TIME: I. Wait time for the interpreter is defined in this manner: Ten (10) minutes for each half hour of scheduled service (to a maximum wait of one hour) using the formal request for interpreting services as a guide. II. In the event one or more of the consumers have not appeared and have not notified the interpreter of their intention to arrive for the service, the interpreter is free to leave the service. The service will be billed in its entirety, using the formal request for interpreting services as a guide.
SERVICE CANCELLATION: I. The office of SLI must receive a service cancellation notification at least 48 business hour prior to the service. If this does not occur, the service will be billed in its entirety using the formal request for interpreting services as a guide. II. A service cancellation is the responsibility of the party who made the formal request for interpreting service. III. The service is determined cancelled if one or more of the consumers (deaf or hearing) do not appear for the service within the established wait time as defined previously. IV. If a service cancellation is received, the interpreter is not obligated to appear for the service.
BILLING: I. A service is billed for actual time on-site. It will include any wait or break time that is scheduled or incidental. II. A minimum two (2) hour charge is applied to all interpreting services. III. SLI bills in increments of 30 minutes. Any additional minutes over the half hour will be rounded up to the next 30 minutes. III. In the event the service is cancelled or ends before the scheduled time, SLI will bill the complete service using the formal request for interpreting services as a guide. IV. In the case the service is extended, SLI will bill for the entire service and will add the additional minutes. PLEASE NOTE: The extension of a service is not automatic. The interpreter(s) who is (are) providing the service must agree to the extension. V. Billing will be handled directly with SLI’s office and will not involve the interpreters who perform the service.
